SPF 50 vs SPF 30: how much longer do you really get?
The marketing gap between SPF 30 and SPF 50 looks tiny: 96.7% of UV blocked versus 98%. Barely a percentage point. But that framing hides the number that matters, how much UV reaches your skin. SPF 30 lets through 3.3%, SPF 50 lets through 2%. That's two-thirds more burning radiation with the SPF 30. Here's how to think about it.

What that means in minutes
Take a fair-skinned (type II) person at UV 8, whose unprotected burn time is roughly 21 minutes. At the full lab application, SPF 30 stretches that toward 10 hours and SPF 50 toward 17, both far beyond the two-hour reapplication window, which is why the difference rarely shows up as 'more time at the beach'. Where it shows up is margin for error: everyone under-applies, and when a coat of sunscreen is effectively performing at a third of its label, starting from 50 leaves you meaningfully better protected than starting from 30.
Why Australian guidance moved to SPF 50+
Under Australian UV, where summer middays run extreme for months, the extra filtration compounds. Cancer Council and SunSmart recommend SPF 50 or SPF 50+, broad spectrum, water resistant for exactly this reason: at the doses our sun delivers, the 1.3 percentage points between 30 and 50 translate into a real difference in accumulated DNA damage over a season, especially on the under-applied, half-rubbed-off coats that real people wear.
That said: an SPF 30 you'll actually wear beats an SPF 50 left in the bag. Texture, price and feel matter. The hierarchy is simple, any properly applied broad-spectrum sunscreen beats none, SPF 50+ beats SPF 30, and neither replaces clothing, hat and shade when the UV index is high.
What matters more than the number
- Broad spectrum, covers UVA (ageing, deep damage) as well as UVB (burning). Non-negotiable.
- Quantity, 7 teaspoons for a full adult body. Most people use half or less.
- Reapplication, every two hours, and after swimming or sweating.

- Is SPF 100 twice as good as SPF 50?
- No. SPF 100 lets through about 1% of UV versus 2% for SPF 50, a halving, not a doubling of protection, and Australian labelling caps claims at 50+ partly because higher numbers encourage over-confidence. Reapplication and coverage matter far more.
- Does SPF 50 protect against UVA too?
- Only if it's labelled broad spectrum, in Australia, sunscreens labelled SPF 50+ broad spectrum must meet UVA requirements under AS/NZS 2604. SPF alone technically describes UVB (burning) protection.
- Which should I buy for my kids?
