UV index vs temperature: why hot days aren't the dangerous ones
They're measuring two different suns. Temperature is infrared, heat you feel instantly. The UV index is ultraviolet, radiation you can't see or feel, which burns skin and drives skin cancer. The two travel together often enough to build a dangerous instinct, and separately often enough to burn people who trust that instinct.

Where the instinct fails
- The cool spring day. Melbourne, October, 19°C with a breeze, and UV 8. Fair skin burns in about 20 minutes while feeling pleasantly cool the whole time. This exact day fills GP waiting rooms every spring.
- The late scorcher. February, 38°C at 4:30 pm, feels lethal, but the sun is low and UV may already be down to 4–5. The heat is a health issue; the burn risk has mostly passed.
- The windy beach day. Wind strips heat from your skin and does precisely nothing to UV. 'It wasn't even hot' is the most common opening line of an Australian sunburn story.
- The overcast one. Cloud blocks warmth far better than it blocks UV.
Why the peaks don't even line up
UV tracks the sun's elevation, peaking near solar noon, around 1 pm in Australian daylight-saving summer. Air temperature keeps climbing for hours after, as the ground releases stored heat, typically peaking between 2 and 5 pm. So the day's most dangerous UV arrives before the day's most convincing heat: by the time it finally feels hot enough to be careful, the worst of the UV has often passed, and the morning's dose was already banked.
The habit that fixes it
Check the UV index the way you check the temperature, one glance. Forecast at the top of the day, live reading for your city before you head out. When it's 3 or above, protect, whatever the thermometer claims. - Can you get sunburnt on a cold day?
- Yes, sunburn has no temperature requirement at all. Skiers burn at −5°C because altitude and snow reflection push UV up while cold suppresses every warning instinct. Skin burns by UV dose alone.
- Why do hot days often have high UV then?
- Common cause, not cause-and-effect: clear high-summer skies produce both strong sun heating and high UV. Correlation holds until it doesn't, spring, wind, cloud and time of day all break it, which is where the burns happen.
- When is UV highest during the day?
- Around solar noon, roughly midday, or 1 pm during daylight saving. As a rule the two hours either side of solar noon deliver about half the entire day's UV.
