Why is Australia's UV so high? Four compounding reasons
It isn't marketing, the Australian sun really is different. Summer UV here runs meaningfully stronger than at comparable latitudes in Europe or North America, and it's not one cause but four stacked on top of each other: orbital timing, latitude, clean air and ozone history. Together they help explain why Australia has the highest skin-cancer rates in the world.
1. Summer happens at Earth's closest approach
Earth's orbit isn't a circle. In early January, peak southern summer, the planet passes perihelion, about 3.4% closer to the sun than at July's aphelion. Solar radiation follows an inverse-square law, so that proximity delivers roughly 7% more UV to a southern-hemisphere summer than a northern one gets. Europe's summer happens at the far end of the orbit; ours happens at the near end.
2. Our cities sit closer to the equator than they feel
Brisbane sits at 27°S, the latitude of Delhi or Orlando. Sydney at 34°S matches Los Angeles and Casablanca. Even Melbourne (38°S) is closer to the equator than Rome, Barcelona or New York. Higher sun angles mean UV takes a shorter path through the atmosphere, and in the tropical north, Darwin at 12°S, Cairns at 17°S, the midday sun passes near vertical for much of the year, which is why extreme readings there barely take a season off.
3. The air is clean
Aerosols, haze and pollution scatter and absorb UV before it reaches the ground, an accidental sunscreen over much of the industrialised northern hemisphere. Australian air, especially away from the cities, is among the world's cleanest, so more of the UV that arrives at the top of the atmosphere arrives at your skin.
4. Ozone: thinner here, and historically damaged
The ozone layer absorbs most incoming UVB. Southern-hemisphere ozone runs naturally somewhat thinner in summer, and decades of ozone depletion, the same chemistry that opened the Antarctic ozone hole, cut it further. The Montreal Protocol is slowly repairing it, but through the peak decades Australians took summer UV several percent stronger than pre-depletion levels.
What it adds up to
ARPANSA measurements routinely put Australian summer middays at UV 12–14 in the capitals and above 16 in the north, while a southern-England summer rarely exceeds 8. The consequence is written in the health statistics: about 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with a skin cancer before 70, the highest rate on Earth. It's also why Australian sun-safety rules, UV 3+ means protect, SPF 50+, the five S's, are stricter than what visitors grew up with. The sun they knew is not the sun that's here.
